Dan and Vicki Barram

Dan currently guides the Campus Ambassador staff in the Northwest and serves on the National Team as the Northwest Regional Campus Specialist. Vicki enjoys being a retreat speaker and seminar teacher throughout the country.
Dan says, “Today’s college population abounds with young women and men needing to be loved and looking for someone to trust, while seeking meaning and purpose in their lives. Our desire is to communicate by our lives and work that Jesus Christ is the One who offers that love and trust, that meaning and purpose.
“We thank God for the privilege of reaching the lost on campuses and encouraging believers at Willamette and throughout the Northwest region.”

Marvin and Jan Cowan
The Cowans were appointed by Missions Door as church-planting missionaries to Utah in 1961. After starting and pastoring churches for several years, they wanted to do more to evangelize Mormons and help other Christians become more effective in reaching them. To accomplish that, Marv has taught seminars on witnessing to Mormons and he and others launched Utah Christian Publications, which he oversees.
As part of that ministry he wrote and published books and tracts that show the difference between Mormonism and the Bible. UCP makes those available with other good books, tapes, videos, DVDs, etc., that provide help in witnessing to Mormons.

Richard and Hope Feredinos
Richard leads several Bible studies at Willamette University, including Potter’s Wheel, a freshmen Bible study, and Tactics in Defending the Faith, an apologetic course designed to teach students how to handle objections to Christianity and how to positively impact others for Christ. They have prayer meetings with several Christian groups, service projects and Richard volunteers with an organization called the International Justice Mission, which focuses on ending oppression in third-world countries.
Richard helps with one or two retreats a semester, focused on revitalizing students’ focus on Christ mixed with fun. He speaks at Koinonia, the weekly fellowship meeting with 40 plus students, once or twice a semester. The most important part of Campus Ambassadors ministry is equipping students to engage other students on campus with the Gospel and training them to be future leaders in God’s Kingdom.

Rod and Betty Franz
Betty is the Oregon Capital District Director which includes Marion and Yamhill counties. Rod is the CEF Northwest District Director for the states of Alaska, Washington, Idaho and Northern California. He & Betty have the privilege and opportunity of visiting each of these States, and their director, once a year.
Rod & Betty also have had the privilege of going to Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, Africa, within the past ten years, to help with the training of many young people in their Christian Youth in Action program. In December 2009, Rod was the speaker at the Kenya CYIA ten-year celebration (above picture) where they helped get that program started in 1999.
CEF Capital District’s goal this year is to get a Good News Club or Release Time Class in each of the 45 public elementary schools in the Salem/Keizer School District. The bottom line is, we need your help. The doors of the public schools are wide open for us to teach the Gospel, we just need more workers. If you could spare a few hours one day a week to help with a club, you could make an eternal difference in the lives of children who have never heard the salvation message before. Call the CEF Capital district office today for more info.
Here is a list of some of the schools, we still have open:
Brush College, Bush, Candalaria, Chapman Hill, Eyre, Gubser, Hallman, Hazel Green, Highland, Lake Labish, Liberty, Richmond and Swegle.

Ed and Kim Gossien
Ed and Kim became missionaries with Awana on January 8, 1995. We served in the Northern California and Northern Nevada from January of 1995 through July of 2005. We have had the privilege of traveling to Germany twice to assist with the Awana ministry there, including starting the first Awana club in former East Germany.
In March of 2005 we were asked to consider changing our ministry area to Western Oregon. After a time of prayer we gladly agreed to this change. We serve 132 churches that currently use the Awana ministry as well as the many churches have contacted us regarding starting Awana in the future.

Buell and Barbara Hadley
The Hadleys spent 1965-1978 in an evangelism and church-planting ministry with CBFMS, now WorldVenture, in Indonesia with the Dyak “head-hunters” of Kalimantan Barat. Being unable to return, they waited for the Lord’s further leading. Feeling called to work with the international students on university campuses, God called them to International Students Inc., in 1990. Eventually He made it clear that Salem was to be their home base of ministry. Over the ensuing years, they have ministered in Portland, McMinnville, and Monmouth, as well as all the Salem colleges and universities. God has used them to minister to the spiritual, emotional, and physical needs of hundreds of foreign students from around the world. They also work with volunteers and teach them how to reach and minister to other culture groups in their neighborhoods.

Ruth Palnick
Ruth left Phoenix, Arizona, and moved to Spokane, Washington, in order to be closer to her family and supporting churches and individuals. God immediately opened doors of ministry in the continued work of Hospice chaplaincy, where Ruth strives to share the Gospel of God’s grace with patients and families facing the end of life.
Desiring to have more opportunity to move from straight evangelism into discipleship, Ruth is also spending one day a week as Protestant chaplain at a rehabilitation/care center.
An additional day a week finds Ruth listening, counseling and teaching classes at an inner-city women’s drop-in center. One hundred homeless and often troubled women pass through the center every day, and Ruth is there to build trusting relationships that she hopes will lead to spiritual sharing.
As serious issues with Ruth’s health arise, she remains grateful for the strength God gives and the prayers of her faithful supporters who “Rejoice with Ruth” in the Lord’s enabling power that allows her to carry on in this glorious work!

Larry and Bonnie Perin
The Perins and their trained volunteers oversee the Angel Tree Ministry for Prison Fellowship in the northwest states (Oregon, Idaho, Washington, Montana and Alaska). They coordinate (either directly or indirectly) 745 churches and have 32 area coordinators working under them. Angel Tree not only provides Christmas gifts for children of state and federal prisoners but has expanded to make a greater impact on these children’s lives with year-round mentoring programs and summer camp scholarships. Camping has grown to twice its size, and more and more Angel Tree children are having the opportunity to go to a Christian camp and hear the Gospel. Larry does some traveling to recruit churches in needy areas for Angel Tree. Bonnie is still leading a Bible study at the Marion County jail, and from that they mentor on the outside from time to time. This includes taking them to church, Bible study, prayer meetings, and providing rides if needed. Bonnie also goes into the jail for One on Ones, which are very important to build trust and relationships.

Dr. Don and Faye Smith
Smiths are Co-Directors of the Institute for International Christian Communication and WorldView Center, an international/intercultural learning community in Portland. The WorldView apartments have been home to key Christian leaders from more than 30 nations who have come to the U.S. to study at Western Seminary, Multnomah, George Fox, and Portland State University. As they live together they learn how the strategic ministries they came to develop through further study fit into what God is doing worldwide. An international effort is focused at the WorldView Center to develop the World Link Graduate Center. The Third World Missions Association (TWMA) launched a cooperative program called World Link University in 1990 to increase cooperation between approximately 25 training centers in association with TWMA in South America, Asia, Africa, and Europe. Dr. Smith and a growing team of highly trained Christian workers and experienced missionaries are hard at work preparing the overall curriculum for distribution online.

Dorretta Brown
Dorretta and husband Zeral, now deceased, began working in the DR over 50 years ago. Dorretta is a member of TIME Ministries, a short-term mission board whose purpose is to lead groups from churches across the U.S. on mission trips so they might experience missions. In the Dominican Republic, the groups help the national pastor in construction, evangelism and discipleship. Dorretta serves as site director for the months groups are scheduled—January through April—and then again all summer long. The rest of the year, while here in the States, she helps raise up more groups and funds for the coming season. She also delights in spending time with her 17 great-grandchildren. Dorretta encourages us as a church to send short-term mission groups to the DR.

Mel and Patty Davis
Mel and Patty minister through publishing, music and church development in Slovenia. With the lack of Christian literature in the Slovene language so apparent, Mel and Patty have focused their energies on providing foundational materials for evangelism and church development, including Slovenia’s first hymnal (the Celebration Hymnal, World/Integrity Music) and the country’s first evangelical magazine. Along with two other couples, they have established the nonprofit organization, Vrelec (Wellspring). The purpose of Vrelec is to equip believers by providing practical tools for evangelism and discipleship, and to minister to seekers through the written and spoken word. Their current projects include the translation of the NIV Study Bible notes for the New Testament. The Davises also assist small church fellowships in the areas of discipleship, teaching and music.

Debbie Eisenhut
Debbie was in ninth grade when she felt God call her to be a medical doctor in missionary service. Now in Pakistan, after finishing her one-year study of the Sindhi language, she will head to the southern city of Shikarpur to work as a surgeon at Shikarpur Christian Hospital. The facility was built in the 1960s as a 35-to-40-bed facility and kept quite busy until September 11 tragedies caused the hospital to lose doctors because of visa problems. The hospital then operated as an outpatient clinic for years and recently has added staff and started accepting inpatients. The lack of good schools and other amenities in tiny villages and rural areas and people must drive 35 kilometers to do most shopping. Because of cultural restrictions, Pakistani women can’t see a doctor unless it is a woman. They desperately need a surgeon in order to receive proper medical treatment. “Faithful is He who calls you, and He also will bring it to pass.” I Thessalonians 5:24

Michael and Diane Kuvshinikov
Michael spends the majority of his time mentoring students at Kiev Theological Seminary. The students learn to love and trust him and to share openly with him. He is also frequently requested to preach in various Ukrainian churches and spends a good deal of time in preparation. Michael is looking forward to a new aspect of ministry – that of traveling to various parts of Ukraine to visit KTS graduates who are now involved in ministry. His goal is to be an encouragement to them. Diane loves helping out in the Kiev Christian Academy (KCA) library. They have over 9,000 books, and finding space for them all in the small room is always a challenge. KCA is an extremely important ministry to missionary children with SEND’s Russian and Ukrainian language program. This is a 2-year program which all new SEND missionaries to Ukraine and Russia must complete. She spends much time with the women and tries to encourage them along the path of language learning and adapting to life in Ukraine. Daughter Audrey is attending Houghton College in Houghton, NY, majoring in English and adolescent education and minoring in business. She hopes to return to Ukraine after graduating to teach English at KCA. Lindey is attending KCA. She loves to play soccer and basketball. She is considering attending Moody College majoring in sports ministry.

Steve and Gay Lawrence
Steve and Gay have been missionaries with New Tribes Mission in Papua New Guinea since 1976. They returned to the US in 2006 to help their three sons get settled into life here in the States. Steve joined New Tribes Mission’s Communications Department, most of who live and work in Florida. The Communications team helps missionaries convey the purpose and vision of NTM, and challenges people to get more involved in what God is doing in tribes around the world. Steve has two areas of responsibility. Every day he finds, edits and uploads photos for the articles that are posted on the New Tribes Mission website. These photos are also used in the daily prayer bulletin sent out by NTM. His other responsibility is to organize and catalog the thousands of pictures in the NTM photo collection. Besides the website, the photos are used in all of the mission publications and also in PowerPoint presentations to effectively communicate what God is doing in tribes around the world. It is essential to have the photos catalogued so that when photos are needed for a particular story, they can be located easily and in a timely manner. Gay has been working for the Salem-Keizer School District’s online school.
This summer Steve and Gay will return to PNG – Steve will fill a full-time position as the Mission’s Finance Office/Human Resources Manager. Gay will teach some classes at the school and may serve as high school secretary when the current person returns to her home country. Much needs to be done leading up to their departure, so please pray for them.

David and Catherine Love
Loves live in Kandem, Germany right near the Swiss and French borders. Their ministry is coordinating short and mid-term missions in Europe and the Middle East. This means that they connect churches in America with European missionaries and/or ministries to accomplish effective ministry in Europe. Kandem is a strategic place to live because of the partnerships with European missionaries there and because it is centrally located for travel. They are continuing to learn German and have been developing relationships with German neighbors and friends. David is involved in the town band. He is the only foreigner in the band and enjoys interacting with people and being involved in the community. This band has several activities throughout the year that involve more than just playing music. They also have a German friend whom they continue to develop a relationship with. She has gone through many struggles and is a nominal Lutheran. Their goal is to influence those around them for Christ. Daughters Kailyn and Daneille are at Black Forest Academy—a missionary kids’ school in Kandem where David and Catherine used to be dorm parents.

Paulo and Ireni Mota
Paulo and Ireni Mota are the national global outreach workers in Sao Paulo with whom our short-term groups work when they go to Brazil. The name given their ministry is “Restoration Ministries.” Committed to ministering to the needs of street kids, Restoration Ministries brings hope by sharing the gospel, strengthening families, encouraging education and providing safe shelter for children at risk. One area of ministry is Day Centers (currently three of them), where kids from ages 4-16 are nurtured through singing, Bible study, games, crafts and fun classes. The caring environment provides them a place of hope outside their desperate living situation.
Another way the group reaches out is through Camp California, a 100-acre campground an hour outside of the city. At the camp, children hear the news of Jesus Christ and experience God’s love for them. For a few days, they can retreat to what they call their “little bit of heaven.”

Jim and Corinne Thorp
After 18 years of ministry in Brazil, Jim and Corinne Thorp redeployed in January 2005 to begin a new ministry in Mozambique. For a long time, they had been considering a change in fields but were not sure where God might be leading them. Then Jim was invited to visit Mozambique, where he was challenged with the need to train church leaders. Jim and Corinne had been involved in a similar ministry in Brazil and it seemed like a good fit, especially since the official language in Mozambique is Portuguese — the same as in Brazil.
Jim was working with a new training center in Maputo, the capital city. The center offers formal and informal training for the ministry. Corinne continued her work mentoring women and discipling new believers in the churches. They were also working with a team of missionaries to plan ways to use their Latin connections to contribute to the work in Mozambique and another former Portuguese colony — Angola.
October 2008 – The call came for Jim & Corinne to become the directors of WorldVenture Ministries in the Americas. Their lives now consist of encouraging and helping the global workers in the Americas whom God has sent to spread the Good News! This includes traveling to many different countries. Pray that God continues to bless both Jim and Corinne with lots of stamina to pack, unpack, re-pack, and visit lots of airports. Praise God for their ability to uplift and encourage!

Jerry and Beth Tucker
One thing Jerry and Beth love about teenagers is “their seemingly boundless energy and enthusiasm.” They see this firsthand every day working with students at Faith Academy, a school dedicated to the educational needs of missionary children (currently from 20 different countries). Not only are students involved in their academic pursuits, but also sports, fine arts, and ministry activities. Students might be doing puppet ministry, teaching English to national or Korean students, working at a local orphanage, or leading a Bible study for younger students. Students are also involved in A4J, which is an AWANA type program for local squatter children, and sometimes as many as 400 can show up! Every spring, the entire high school student body takes a ministry day and does whatever is scheduled for the day. It may be anything from building solid housing for Habitat for Humanity to helping pick up trash along a highway. In addition to teaching two classes of U.S. History, Jerry is filling in as Business Administrator, and Beth teaches 9th and 12th grade English.
Beginning June 2010, Tucker’s will be taking a one-year furlough in order to be near family for health needs. They will be based in California at their daughter Cindy’s home. However, they will also be spending time in Oregon with Beth’s dad.

Allan & Baska Vance
Since turning the church over to a new lead pastor, Vance’s ministry focus has changed to the development of a church team to begin a new church plant. In October they will be renting a large room and grounds of a new Christian School to start a small group study and evangelistic activities. A soccer and skate ministry has already been started. They continue, as well, involvement with the New Life Baptist Church’s discipleship and community social action ministries. With evangelism and discipleship in the forefront, this includes individual and small group Bible study and counseling. Community outreach includes helping to meet physical needs and tutoring for “at risk” children. Plans for adult education and computer literacy are in the works.

Brian and LaVonne
Brian and LaVonne work in South Asia with IDEAS, a nonprofit humanitarian organization. South Asia has over 1 billion people dominated by Hinduism, Islam and the caste system. Over 250 million people are “forgotten” in the caste dominated world. Brian and LaVonne partner with local organizations and a team of five other IDEAS couples to make it possible for these forgotten people to obtain education for the first time in generations and lay the foundation for them to find hope and love from their Creator. Brian is the IT Director for a local consulting business from which to provide technology solutions and training to ensure the success of education for the forgotten. LaVonne is teaching the teachers of these schools, sharing her expertise in child development, health and education as well as focusing on their own children.
Jay and Denise
Jay and Denise have lived in Southwest Asia since 1994 among a Muslim people group. The country where they work has a population of over 75 million people but only about 3000 believers; i.e., one believer for every 25,000 people. In 2005, the family relocated to start a new church plant in an unreached neighborhood on the outskirts of a large city. At that time there was no fellowship in this area of over 200,000 people. They work with one other WorldVenture couple interacting with local businessmen, officials, and university students through neighborhood contacts, business, referrals, and a website. Their children’s attendance in a public school provides an opportunity for Denise to model her Christian faith as she entertains other students’ mothers and her neighbors. In early 2007, a small group of believers started meeting regularly. They hope this is the beginning of a permanent fellowship in that part of the city.
