Pastor's Picks

Check out what Pastor Mark is reading!

Beyond the Bible, I primarily read in three areas:

  1. Spiritual Life—Learning how to cultivate a heart for God.
  2. Gifting—I focus on the spiritual gifts of preaching/teaching and leadership. That is how God has hard wired me and that is what I love to do
  3. Spiritual Mentoring with a heavy focus on family issues

Here are a few books I’ve recently read:

Quiet Talks on Prayer, S.D. Gordon
This is a timeless classic that will deepen your passion for God and your belief and practice in prayer. Prayer has never been easy for me. So I constantly try to grow in this area. Gordon’s work will give you clear and helpful instruction to mature your prayer life.

Reimagining Evangelism; Rick Richardson
I liked this book for several reasons but two in particular stood out. First, it is the first book on evangelism that spoke of the work of the Holy Spirit. It moved evangelism from beyond mechanics to the dynamic spiritual journey that it is. Second, it treated evangelism in a very contextual manner. Every person I witness place their faith in Christ is on a Spiritual Journey and I am only one part of their life. This book helps me see the bigger picture.

The Five Dysfunctions of a Team; Patrick Lencioni
This is a classic from Lencioni. He is one of the best writers in the area of leadership and teams. If you are on a team or lead a team I believe this book is a must read.

The Pursuit of God; A.W. Tozer
I am not a big fan of rereading books. However, there are certain books that you need to break your practice and reread. The Pursuit of God is one of those. I was recently given this book by a new friend. I took the gift as a nudge from my Father in heaven to pursue him harder. The business of church can subtly lead you away from God as strange as that sounds. So this journey with Tozer has once again awakened good thoughts on our amazing God. I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.
