Growing in Your Faith

How do I grow in my Faith?

Trusting Jesus Christ for salvation is the most important decision a person could ever make. When someone is “born-again”, they become a new creation and, in a spiritual sense, they are like a newborn baby. Infants need to be fed, cared for and nurtured as they mature and grow into healthy adults. This principle applies to both the development of newborn babies and newborn believers in Christ.

Healthy things ought to grow, and we want to assist you in your pursuit of spiritual growth. Here are some suggestions that will help you cultivate a deeper relationship with God.

  1. Pray daily: Prayer is the means by which we have access to God. Talk to God and tell Him what is on your mind. (click here to for info on our prayer ministry: http://fbcsalem.org/community-life/prayer/)
  2. Read your Bible: Don’t be intimidated! Start in the gospel of John. Find a devotional book. Start somewhere and take baby steps. (check out our library for great devotionals: http://fbcsalem.org/media-resources/library/)
  3. Spend time with other Christians: God created us for community and being around folks who have been Christians for a long time will be encouraging to you! (Click here to find a small group to get involved with: http://fbcsalem.org/community-life/small-groups/)
  4. Get connected at church: This is where infants learn to crawl, and then learn to walk…and eventually start to run! Christian fellowship and Biblical instruction is vital to the development of spiritual maturity. (click here to learn about our adult education program: http://fbcsalem.org/community-life/adult-education/)
  5. Guard your mind: Consider what sorts of things you are listening to on the radio and watching on TV. Add a few Christian songs to your iPod. Mix in a book by a Christian author every once in a while. Memorize a Bible Verse. It’ll help balance out some of the other input you’re getting! (Check out our Pastor’s Picks for some suggestions: http://fbcsalem.org/media-resources/pastors-picks/)
  6. Tell others about your new relationship with God: This takes courage! When you share your faith with others, not only will God give you strength but you will also receive the blessing of knowing you shared God’s love! Invite your friends to SFBC.
